On Friday March 30th, 2018 at 8.30pm a function was held at Rays Hotel, Borama, in honour of Dr. Mohamed Muse Jibril (PhD).
The event was organized by Students' Union of Amoud University in collaboration with the Office of Students Affairs and Counseling Services (OSACS). Several dignitaries graced the occasion including Mr. Abdisalam Nour Hussein "Ilburo", one of the co-founders of Amoud University. Several speakers congratulated Dr. Mohamed for achieving this feat and indicated that they were proud to be associated with Amoud University since its inception. Mr. Abdisalam opened the ceremony by first narrating how they dared to dream and conceived the idea of establishing Amoud University, initially naming it Awdal University.
Mr. Geedi, who was then Director General (DG) of Higher Education in the former Somalia Government before its collapse further narrated how he and others who were pioneer staunch supporters of the new university helped nurture the big dream of a university in Somaliland. He is credited with contacting organizations with which he had had relations and strong ties to while he worked as the Director General. In this regard he used his connections which he had established in the USA with higher education institutions and other organizations and exploited this advantage to bring some American lecturers who were then the first ever foreign lecturers to come to teach at Amoud University.
Mr. Ibrahim Ayeh "Jemi", one of those pioneering partners who played a big role during the initial establishment of Amoud University also encouraged the university administration to consider introducing other new courses such as veterinary medicine and geology, two major courses in his view which already are so relevant for development of Somaliland at this point in time, based on the pastoralist nature of the population and the potential mineral deposits of Somaliland. He narrated how he and Prof. Ahmed Ismail Samatar were among the group of individuals who were first to mobilize fundraising campaigns in aid of Amoud University at its nascent stages.
Dr. Mohamed Alabari who is a lecturer overseas and one of the pioneers of Amoud University encouraged Amoud university to focus on practical skills which could make a difference in peoples lives within the community. Identifying himself with the phrase "Tell me and I will learn, show me and I will remember and teach me and I will understand", Dr. Alabari emphasized the need for Amoud to adopt courses and teaching methods that would impart life long practical skills on its graduates to make them useful, productive members of the society.
Prof. Mohamed Mohamoud Jamaa "Derie", praised the status and standing of Amoud University in the society today arguing that it is public knowledge what Amoud University has achieved and continues to achieve in the higher education sector and in community service under stewardship of Prof. Suleiman A. Gulaid. He averred that those who negatively criticize the university are either academically challenged or have found the high standards set for hiring or maintenance of teaching staff at the university too high a bar for them to match up, therefore resorting to negativity and thus should be dismissed. He maintained firmly that Amoud University was on course to achieving many firsts just as it has done by being first university in Somaliland, with its first home grown Masters programmes, the PhD achieved by Dr. Mohamed and many other innumerable success stories.
Mr. Abdirashid Samatar also spoke of the time when the idea of establishing the university was brought to the table in Saudi Arabia, he would go ahead and remember Mr. Bashir Farah Kahiye who was the person behind the change of names from Awdal University to Amoud University.
Dr. Fatima, dean School of Nursing & Midwifery at Amoud College of Health Sciences further praised the role that Amoud University has played in transforming the local community citing several cases where many women meet her in the streets and narrate stories to her of how their daughters' and sons' lives have been changed through acquisition of education from Amoud University. The role of Amoud University she said, can be felt in every sector of the society today, and that is an indisputable truth. She congratulated Amoud University for a job well done, and for the chance given to Dr. Mohamed to enable him pursue his degree and more so to Dr. Mohamed 's self-discipline and determination which has enabled him achieve this rare feat, the impact of which will continue to resonate in the society and local academic circles, many years to come.
Dr. Mohamed Muse Jibril holds a doctorate in Business Administration(Management and Organization) from Uluda University, Bursa, Turkey, which he started in 2012 and just completed this year 2018. He also has a Master of Arts in Development Studies from Kampala International University, Uganda, which he undertook between year 2009 and year 2011. In addition he holds a Certificate of Financial Planning and Management (ACCA Syllabus) from Fort Hare University, South Africa, which he pursued between 2005 to 2007. Prior to this his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Amoud University, Somaliland was achieved between 2001 to 2005. His secondary school studies was in Sh. Ali Jawhar Secondary School between 1985 to 1989 where he sat for the General Certificate Examination (GCE).
Prof. Abdisamad E. Habaneh, dean Faculty of Business & Public Administration Amoud university gave a glowing tribute to Mr. Abdisalam N. Hussein alongside other founders of the university for dreaming big and establishing the university which stands tall among its peers as leader in higher education sector to-date. He also thanked the management under Prof. Suleiman for achievements made since its inception that have brought the university to the level it is today. In conclusion he invited Dr. Mohamed M. Jibril to the podium.
Dr. Mohamed gave a vote of thanks to all guests who had come to the event to celebrate with him. He also thanked Amoud University, Prof. Suleiman A. Gulaid, President, Amoud University for the opportunity the university under his stewardship has given several members of Amoud university fraternity for further studies, growth and development and generally for steering the university in the right direction. Furthermore he was grateful to Students' Union of Amoud University and Office of Students Affairs and Counselling Services (OSACS) for organizing the welcoming event at Rays Hotel. He encouraged all participants that with focus and determination, everything is possible. Success is 99% perspiration and 1% aptitude. The colourful ceremony culminated with gifts being presented to Dr. Mohamed, a series of photo ops and guests dispersing at around 10.30pm.
